The UC Speculative Futures Collective welcomed comics creators John Jennings and Damian Duffy, who adapted Octavia E. Butler’s Kindred and Parable of the Sower, and Deborah Whaley, author of Black Women in Sequence: Re-inking Comics, Graphic Novels, and Anime and co-editor of Keywords for Comics Studies, as part of the multi-year, UC Office of the President funded initiative.
They were joined by UCSD Ethnic Studies PhD students Katherine Steelman and Melanie West, two recipients of Black Studies Project dissertation fellowships, who will talk about their work in progress at the intersection of Speculative Futures/Black Studies/Comics Studies.
This event was organized by Shelley Streeby and the UC Speculative Futures Collective, and co-sponsored by the Black Studies Project and the Arthur C Clarke Center for Human Imagination at UC San Diego.
