With sadness, we note the passing of Frederick Ordway III. Fred was a space scientist, author, and the longest-serving member of the American Rocket Society (joining in 1939 as its youngest member ever). Fred was a donor to the UC San Diego Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination and he supported the newly formed Center in building our network, especially around the space industry.
Fred recently attended two events for the Clarke Center. In May 2014, he participated in a luncheon that the Clarke Foundation hosted at the Smithsonian Future is Here event. On June 12th, 2014 Fred attended the "2001: A Space Odyssey" Screening and Discussion event at UC San Diego. While he was in town he held a book signing (where his latest book sold out!) and he toured the Clarke Center's research labs. Fred spoke at the 2001 event about his experiences as a technical advisor for Kubrick's science fiction masterpiece. He also spoke about his life-long friendship with Sir Arthur Clarke. Video of the event can be viewed here:
